The heart of IABR–2016–THE NEXT ECONOMY is the former coffee warehouse Fenixloods II, in the Rotterdam neighborhood of Katendrecht.
The Fenixloods is home to the exhibition but is is also where WHAT'S NEXT? will unfold: ten weeks of Next Talks, Next Salons, Next Steps, Next Meet-Ups, Next Walks, Next op Zuid, and an extensive partner program.

IABR–2016 will integrate exhibition and debate even more than previous editions. WHAT’S NEXT? is an ongoing exchange of ideas with participants and visitors about the future of the city in the Next Economy, a program that takes place in the middle of the exhibition, and partly during opening hours.
This continuous program of conferences, lectures, meet-ups, workshops, and debates starts during the opening weekend and closes on 3 July with a final debate.

The opening of the exhibition THE NEXT ECONOMY on 23 April also marks the beginning of ten weeks of discussion and exchange about the future of the city: WHAT’S NEXT?
This series starts on Saturday afternoon, 23 April, with three panel discussions addressing the main themes of IABR–2016–THE NEXT ECONOMY: the heathy and socially inclusive city, the productive city, and the green sustainable city.
On Sunday 24 April, Next Salon #1 will take place, the first in a series of Sunday afternoon meetings that zoom in on current events that impact the debate about the Next Economy.

On both Saturday and Sunday there is also a continuous program of presentations by guests of and participants in the IABR–2016.

Tickets for the opening weekend are limited and only available at the box office in Fenixloods II.

Every Friday afternoon, a Next Talk will take place in the auditorium of THE NEXT ECONOMY exhibition. Inspirational ideas for the future of the city are given a platform. International speakers that stimulate and intensify the debate about the Next Economy include Francine Houben (architect, Mecanoo, Delft; curator 1^st IABR, Mobility), Anab Jain (director Superflux), Keller Easterling (architect, Yale School of Architecture, Connecticut), Mark Swilling (University of Stellenbosch and Sustainability Institute Cape Town), Jack Self (REAL Foundation, London; curator 2016 British Pavilion, Venice Biennale), Edgar Pieterse (director African Centre for Cities, University of Cape Town) and Oliver Wainwright (The Guardian, London).

On six Tuesday evenings, RUIMTEVOLK and the IABR will highlight the issues raised by the quest for the Next Economy. How do designers, administrators, and professionals, active on the local, regional, national or international scale, tackle the issues the IABR–2016 raised: the energy transition, the healthy city, and the productive city? How can designers contribute to the reduction of the spatial separation between the disadvantaged and the winners, to a more inclusive city? How can design contribute to an urban economy that adds local value and is circular? In short, which are the concrete Next Steps for design, planning, and governance?

The location of the IABR–2016–THE NEXT ECONOMY, Fenixloods II, is more than an attractive home base for the IABR–2016. Many challenges that Rotterdam will have to face in the coming decades during the transition to the Next Economy can also be found in and around Katendrecht, where the Fenixloods is located: south of the river – “op Zuid”.

The urban development of Rotterdam hops, skips and jumps towards South Rotterdam. Along with Afrikaanderwijk and Charlois, Katendrecht is at the heart of the transformation challenge. Local residents and small entrepreneurs in the area are wary of gentrification, of new developments at the expense of the current (affordable) living, working, and shopping space that will sooner or later push current residents from the area.
Reason enough to look at the area through the lens of IABR–2016: How can we use spatial design here on our way to the Next Economy we want? Is there an alternative to gentrification? Is it possible to address the transition of this part of Rotterdam in a smarter and more inclusive way? Are development models imaginable and applicable that include locally added value and existing qualities as starting points?

These questions are the starting point for the program Next op Zuid, including lunchtime lectures, interventions, presentations, guided tours, workshops, and more. Here, the expertise of local partners and stakeholders is connected to the international knowledge network of the IABR.
The IABR develops Next op Zuid in collaboration with a wide-ranging local alliance including the Afrikaanderwijk Cooperative, Verhalenhuis, Heijmans, AIR, De Rotterdam Tours and RAAF.

During IABR–2016, the IABR and its partners will organize a string of conferences in the auditorium. These will take place before the exhibition opens at 1 pm. However, several of these conferences are open to the public.

The outcomes of the IABR–Ateliers are not only anchor points of the exhibition, but they will also be presented and discussed. Possible concrete follow up in Groningen, Utrecht, Rotterdam, Brussels and on the North Sea are being explored together with governments, businesses and stakeholders.

Activities related to the IABR–2016 will also be organized elsewhere in Rotterdam and beyond, in cities with operational IABR–Ateliers such as Groningen, Utrecht and Brussels.

The IABR–2016 is a platform for creative coalitions of designers, administrators, businesses, citizens, and other agents of change, from the Netherlands and abroad. During the entire Biennale, members of the Curator Team will spontaneously and in small settings meet with guests and participants to reflect on projects, urgencies, current events, and challenges.
The language is Dutch or English and visitors are always very welcome to join in the discussion.

The IABR–2016–THE NEXT ECONOMY resists classification. Therefore, the Curator Team and other experts have constructed various ‘paths’ through the exhibition for visitors to follow. Every once and a while a guide will be present, to turn the route into a tour.

The routes are available for free. And when a tour happens, everyone is welcome to join.

When exploring the Next Economy we’re in fact exploring the future of our children and grandchildren. In what kind of city would we want them to live, work and learn thirty, or even fifty years from now? And what is there own perspective on the city of the future? What would they want houses to look like? And do they expect to be driving in electric cars or that there won’t be any cars at all?

For IABR–2016–THE NEXT ECONOMY, children of De Schalm, a primary school in the Rotterdam district of Katendrecht, developed a treasure hunt tour through the exhibition. When following this route other children too can cultivate their ideas about what the city of tomorrow might look like.

The tour is free and can be collected at the box office. Note that children up until the age of 12 have free entry to the exhibition.
