From the opening weekend of the IABR–2014– to early July, the IABR and its partners hosted an extensive program of lectures, debates, conferences, presentations, events and field trips.

It started of right away, on 29 May, when the exhibition URBAN BY NATURE– opened to the public, and when a comprehensive OPENING DAY PROGRAM was presented in the Kunsthal.

On 12 June the IABR conference PRODUCTIVE SPACE BY DESIGN– explored new, design driven strategies for innovative urban development models.

Productive Space BY DESIGN–

On June 12, 2014 the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam held its international conference Productive Space By Design–.

The conference was part of IABR–2014–URBAN BY NATURE’s public program of events parallel to the exhibitions at the Kunsthal Rotterdam.

Intended as a ‘collective thinking exercise’ rather than a series of speeches and round table discussions, its goal was to explore the consequences of the paradigm shift that is identified by URBAN BY NATURE –the irreversible blurring of the urban and natural systems and planning worlds– on the practices of design and of urban development.
Hence the conference’s foremost question was: Can design help us find an alternative model of urban development, one that does not capitalize on the exploitation of land and natural resources, but on the productive capacity of people and space?

During the last biennale, the 5^th IABR: Making City, the Schieblock and its surroundings, the Rotterdam Central District, was one of the three IABR Test Sites. ZUS was both the curator and moving force behind Test Site Rotterdam.

The Schieblock launched many initiatives during the 5^th IABR, like the Luchtsingel, the Biergarten, and the DakAkker. Now, two years later, the Test Site is a success. Against the economic odds, the area gathered a lot of momentum through many small and specific interventions, as ZUS intended. This has not gone unnoticed, even abroad. In 2013, ZUS and the IABR jointly received the URBAN INTERVENTION AWARD BERLIN for Test Site Rotterdam.

During the IABR–2014–, the Schieblock will once again host many activities, including an URBAN PICNIC on the final day of the biennale to celebrate the opening of Pompenburg Park, heralding the completion, after two years of hard work, of the Luchtsingel, and the successful end of Test Site Rotterdam.

On May 29, Ascension Day and the day after the official opening ceremony, the IABR–2014– will present a series of talks and debates. The program will take place in the Kunsthal Auditorium and the Kunsthalcafé.

URBAN DESIGN IN TIMES OF CLIMATE CHANGE
An integrated approach, and collaboration between the design and water sectors is an essential precondition when we want to develop innovative solutions for sustainable urban development. The first session of the symposium is dedicated to Rebuild by Design.The second session presents cases from Jakarta, Istanbul, Rotterdam and elsewhere.

ZigZagCity 2014

ZigZagCity, two exhibitions at Het Nieuwe Instituut, Hidden Gardens and the Day of Architecture.

ZIGZAGCITY
Architecture Festival ZigZagCity consists of an alternative route across Rotterdam to encourage visitors to look at the city in a different light. The history and transformation of the Laurenskwartier are the inspiration for a program along the route that includes interventions, performances, and spatial installations, running from Pompenburg Park to Blaakse Bos or vice versa. All of the activities together offer a wonderful anthology of the development of the city and the underlying architectural and social beliefs.

HET NIEUWE INSTITUUT: ARCHITECTURE, DESIGN, E-CULTURE
THE NEW PAVILION: YOURTOPIA
This summer Bjarne Mastenbroek and his office SeARCH will design a temporary house, ‘Yourtopia’.
Yourtopia will trigger a program of relevant lectures, performances, workshops, and other public events from late May to September.

HET NIEUWE INSTITUUT: ARCHITECTURE, DESIGN, E-CULTURE
WOOD – MATERIAL & LANDSCAPE
The exhibition WOOD – Material & Landscape explores the origin and future of wood in a series of observations and investigations. The exhibition was designed by the winner of the CCA Young Curator Award 2011, Dan Handel.

HIDDEN GARDENS
Small gardens and large gardens, austere gardens and romantic gardens, and roof gardens, vegetable gardens, design gardens, and gardens matching the urban landscape: this weekend, the owners of some 90 Hidden Gardens open up their gardens to the public. Enthusiasts and interested parties are given a unique opportunity to peer over fences and behind hedges to discover a hidden, green Rotterdam.
