WATERSCHOOL M4H+ : INdirect INvisible WATER

‘Direct water' is the water that everyone uses on a daily basis in and around the house: to shower, wash, and flush the toilet, for instance. This water is produced in the Netherlands and its consumption is visible and measurable. ‘Indirect water', on the other hand, is more or less invisible. You consume it as a consumer of products that require water during the production cycle, products that usually come from outside the Netherlands. The production of one kilogram of chocolate, for example, requires more than 17,000 liters of water. The average Dutch person has a considerable water footprint and consumes almost twice as much water as the average world citizen.

The installation INdirect INvisible WATER, which can be seen in the working exhibition WATERSCHOOL M4H+, wants to increase the awareness of water, especially when it comes to our indirect use of it. On Wednesday afternoon 21 July, the makers of the installation, Studio Corvers and Carla Herrewijnen, will give a workshop. Participants can measure their personal water footprint, analyze which 'type' of water that footprint is made up of, and discuss the various courses of action with the makers.

Future Flux starts on Monday 5 July at the IABR. IABR­–DOWN TO EARTH curator team members Thijs van Spaandonk (cocurator RECLAIMING THE COMMONS) and Jurgen Bey (cocurator WATERSCHOOL M4H+) as well as Group A founder Folkert van Hagen, one of the driving forces behind the development of the Keilepand in which the IABR is housed, talk about the theme Urban Climate Makers. Led by Léon Kranenburg they will discuss, among themselves and with the audience, the impact of climate issues on the development of the city as well as ways to use the climate challenge as leverage to create well-designed, socially inclusive and resilient cities – in the Merwe-Vierhavens District and elsewhere.

During the last meeting of this triptych, we will talk about how planting trees and producing wood can contribute to the greening of the city and to the ambition to use M4H as a testing ground and showcase for the circular future of the city and port.

With Ludo Hermans (urban planner at the municipality of Tilburg), Erik Sterk (director of the Pluspunt Rotterdam Foundation and the Voedseltuin Foundation), Nadia Pepels (architect at STUDIO NADIAN) and Jurgen Bey (designer Studio Makkink & Bey).

Guided Tour by Eva Pfannes
Pfannes, a partner at Rotterdam based OOZE Architects and Urbanists, is the current lead designer of the IABR–Atelier Rotterdam. Building on earlier work done by Architecture Workroom Brussels, Civic and Posad Maxwan, among others, Pfannes and her team focused on designing a LEAP, a Local Energy Action Plan for the Bospolder-Tussendijken district in Rotterdam.
The LEAP and the accompanying “toolbox” are presented in the exhibition RECLAIMING THE COMMONS. Combined they offer a concrete answer to the research question raised by the IABR–Atelier Rotterdam about how the energy transition can be used as a lever for a much broader agenda for transformative change. In the hands of the residents of Bospolder-Tussendijken the LEAP and the toolbox contribute to realizing the Sustainable Development Goals on the scale of the district.

This water is produced in the Netherlands and its consumption is visible and measurable. ‘Indirect water', on the other hand, is more or less invisible. You consume it as a consumer of products that require water during the production cycle, products that usually come from outside the Netherlands. The production of one kilogram of chocolate, for example, requires more than 17,000 liters of water. The average Dutch person has a considerable water footprint and consumes almost twice as much water as the average world citizen.

The installation INdirectly INvisible WATER, which can be seen in the working exhibition WATERSCHOOL M4H+, wants to increase the awareness of water, especially when it comes to our indirect use of it. On Friday afternoon 18 June, the makers of the installation, Studio Corvers and Carla Herrewijnen, will give a workshop. Participants can measure their personal water footprint, analyze which 'type' of water that footprint is made up of, and discuss the various courses of action with the makers.

The first workshop in the WATERSCHOOL M4H+ is Architecture for Microbes, an ongoing investigation by artist in residence Philipp Kolmann into possible ways of peaceful interactions with microbes within our domestic environments.
We will follow the circular journey of making sourdough bread. From the soil to the crops and the process of fermentation into our foods. Microbiological communities help us to get the most out of our foods, nutrients and flavor. Throughout the day we invite you to take part in this cycle of natural leavened bread making, centered around care-giving as a practice, sharing local microbes with you in the form of fermented foods.

Philipp Kolmann works with food, microbes, smell and taste to provide an affective connectedness with our environment. As a designer it is his goal to extend the understanding of smells and taste to be recognized and applied as valuable, corporeal, and local cultural data. In tune with disciplines, such as microbiology, anthropology, agriculture, perfumer, botany.
In collaboration with Liza Witte and Suzanne Bernhardt and with special thanks to the Stimuleringsfonds Creatieve Industrie.

The City of Rotterdam’s program Weatherwise Rotterdam presented four design offices with a challenge: devise and design a future scenario for Rotterdam, keeping in mind that the city is facing climate change, extreme weather and rising sea levels. The designers were asked to take as their point of departure the decision to embrace the water, rather than continuing to fight it. And to consider whether or not we will be able to live in Rotterdam in 2060, and if so, how.

Four future scenarios
The four future scenarios will be presented at METEOPOLIS, an exhibition that offers visitors a look at Rotterdam in 2060, in the context of IABR–DOWN TO EARTH and its core question: Where Can We Land? The aim is to further an informed, open and pointed discussion about the complex problems that climate change will confront us with and to influence decision-making processes in such a way that we will still be able to live in Rotterdam in 40 years’ time.

Bospolder-Tussendijken is one of the circa 5,000 districts in the Netherlands that, according to the National Climate Agreement of 2019, will have to become gas-free. Initial experience shows that this is not at all easy. There are problems everywhere, for instance with implementation and, above all, financing. And that's why sufficiently broad public support is lacking. Actually, we just don’t know how to wean our districts off of natural gas.

Adding value
Thijs van Spaandonk questions the current business model of the energy transition. Do citizens, given that they are the financiers of energy transition measures and consumers of energy, get value for money? In his guided tour, he will talk about what role citizens can play and how they, based on that role, and in collaboration with others, can make real choices about making their district more sustainable. A process is needed whereby the energy transition must be linked to other transition challenges confronting the living environment. He argues for an energy transition that does not see the district as a revenue model, but that focuses on a new energy system that adds real value to the quality of life in neighborhoods.

A guided tour through the exhibition by Eva Pfannes, one of the curators of WHOSE ENERGY IS IT, ANYWAY?

Pfannes, a partner at Rotterdam based OOZE Architects and Urbanists, is the current lead designer of the IABR–Atelier Rotterdam. Building on earlier work done by Architecture Workroom Brussels, Civic and Posad Maxwan, among others, Pfannes and her team focused on designing a LEAP, a Local Energy Action Plan for the Bospolder-Tussendijken district, locally known as BoTu, and one of the first districts in Rotterdam that have to become gas-free. The main aim of the LEAP is to organize the energy transition at district level in such a way that it furthers local support and co-ownership of the transition within the neighborhood while also contributing to Rotterdam’s ambitions to become a resilient city and help realize the Sustainable Development Goals.

In recent years the IABR–Atelier Rotterdam, a partnership between the IABR and the City of Rotterdam, has been investigating how the inevitable energy transition can be a lever for what the inhabitants of Bospolder-Tussendijken truly need. Can residents become co-owners of the transition in such a way that it contributes to social inclusiveness and the sustainable improvement of their living environment and quality of life? In order to find out, every district needs its own LEAP.

A guided tour by Bram Willemse, designer at Studio Marco Vermeulen (SMV), through the exhibition DOWN TO EARTH: DROUGHT IN THE DELTA.

Together with Marco Vermeulen, the lead designer of the IABR–Atelier Drought in the Delta, Bram Willemse explored the possibilities of increasing the water buffering capacity of the Dutch Delta, and what opportunities this presents.
The results of the Atelier, which are central to the exhibition, are proposed as building blocks for a new national freshwater strategy. In addition, the curator of DROUGHT IN THE DELTA, George Brugmans, selected four exemplary Dutch projects that are already very concretely exploring the solution directions proposed by the Atelier.
