DEVELOPMENT BY DESIGN

online mini-conference

IABR, RAvB, DRIFT

PLEASE NOTE THAT DUE TO THE PANDEMIC ALL DATES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE

For now, we are calling it development by design. But what exactly is it?That’s the question that the IABR, the Dutch Research Institute for Transitions (DRIFT) and the Rotterdam Academy of Architecture (RAvB) will be exploring together in the coming year.

Both the IABR, especially through its IABR–Ateliers, and the RAvB have extensive experience with research by design: the targeted use of spatial design tools to explore how major challenges and living environments are connected as well as what, from the spatial domain, the action perspective is for concrete transformative change. At the same time, we realize that research by design does not nearly often enough succeed in actually setting transitions in motion – a serious issue that we have tabled in the 2018 edition THE MISSING LINK. By connecting DRIFT’s transitional thinking to IABR’s and RAvB’s research by design practice, we expect to be able to make strides and devise a transitional design practice.

This exploration, initiated by George Brugmans (IABR), Derk Loorbach (DRIFT) and Thijs van Spaandonk (RAvB), will take a year. The results will be shared during the next edition of the IABR, SHOCK AND ROLL and we will kick off with an online mini-conference on Monday, June 22.
