Like the rest of the world, the Netherlands are facing the enormous challenge of realizing the climate goals. Not surprisingly, the recently installed Board of Mayor and Aldermen of the City of Rotterdam has set ambitious goals when it presented, in the Summer of 2018, its policy document ‘New Energy for Rotterdam’.
A successful energy transition requires a complete rethink of the infrastructure of the city while at the same time it has to be perceived as a social project. As IABR–Atelier Rotterdam’s perspective has it, the energy transition can and should be a leverage for inclusive city making.
Easier said than done. How should we proceed, fast enough, in enough places at the same time, learning by doing, guided by a socially inclusive approach, and with the ambition to make a real qualitative leap in terms of resilient city making?
