IABR and the initiators of the Rotterdam Makers District, city and port of Rotterdam, see the Merwe-Vierhavens area (M4H) and surrounding neighbourhoods as an ideal area to explore the future, hands on. On the Test Site M4H+ the energy transition and social issues inevitably link up with challenges in the fields of circular economy, the (small) manufacturing industry, and food and water management.
Rotterdam as Textile Mine (and other fantastic stories from the belly of the clothing container)
The textile waste in Rotterdam is ten times the size of its textile input, reflecting the role of the city as a ‘hub’ in the global chain of textile waste. Imagine if we could exploit this residual flow as a mine from which we extract natural resources, keeping value and generating jobs.

There is no time to waste: according to critics, textile is the most polluting industry after the oil sector. The production of natural fibres such as cotton requires large quantities of land and water, man-made fibres such as polyester are one of the main sources of pollution due to micro-plastics, and the chemicals used during industrial processing represent a hazard for the workers in the sweatshops. As icing on the cake: two thirds of the cloths we throw away end up in the incinerator. But we can change this! Current and new recycling methods, whether mechanical or chemical, offer incredible opportunities to reduce our footprint.
On Friday 29 june Team 1010 will look into opportunities for short circuiting the production and consumption cycle of textile within the M4H area with a working sessions (by invitation) with experts and stakeholders from the area.
On four Friday afternoons in June, Test Site M4H+ spotlights four flows: ENERGY (June 8, as part of the conference The Energy Transition as a Lever of Resilient Cities), AGRI-FOOD (June 15), BUILDING MATERIALS (June 22) and TEXTILES (29 June). Working sessions for stakeholders generate input for the further development of guiding principles and pilot projects for the future development of M4H+.
