In the past, the development of North Brabant into an innovative and ambitious region was accommodated by active spatial decentralization. Today, administrators and civilians face a number of major social challenges. The development of an alternative spatial plan and the redevelopment of the 'urban carpet' are imperative.
To investigate what that alternative plan and those new development principles may be, BrabantStad (a coalition of the Province of North Brabant and the cities of Eindhoven, Helmond, Den Bosch, Breda and Tilburg) , four Water Boards and the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam have joined forces. From March 2013 until August 2014, they worked in the IABR–Atelier BrabantStad, together with a research team of designers: Floris Alkemade Architect, LOLA Landscape Architects and Architecture Workroom Brussels.
Reweaving the Urban Carpet documents the research and presents the Atelier's results. With an introduction by Yves de Boer and George Brugmans, and contributions by the designers.
