The Next Story #8 : Robbert Jan van der Veen

About the creation of ‘The Happy Neighborhood’ and ‘The Happy City’

Verhalenhuis Belvédère
Robbert Jan is the founder of Rotterdam-based Plein06 for urban planning, landscaping and strategy. What he likes best is to draw and sketch a fantastic and (sometimes) almost impossibly bright future together with residents, governments , and other stakeholders. Last year, he founded the Honours Programme InnovatieLAB, an independent platform of students from Leiden, Delft, and Rotterdam that jointly conduct research by design into ‘The Happy City.’
Robbert Jan van der Veen

As a result of his experiences with InnovatieLAB, he is increasingly operating on the interface between spatial investments and human contact. On Sunday 12 June, Robbert Jan will tell us about his experiences with Katendecht and the creation of ‘The Happy Neighborhood’ and ‘The Happy City.’

A the request of IABR–2016 the Verhalenhuis Belvédère developed The Next Story. In ten afternoon sessions during the Biennale, remarkable stories of inhabitants of Katendrecht will be shared with the audience. What is their Next Story? Based on their past and present situation, what future would they want, and how is their narrative related to Katendrecht? Together, these personal anecdotes will show how active individuals can influence the development of their neighborhood, and even their city.
