Urban Underground 2016

Municipality Rotterdam, TNO, TUDelft, International Tunneling Association + Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment, COST-SUBURBAN

URBAN UNDERGROUND – THE NEXT ECONOMY is a full-day programme a full-day programme which addresses how careful deployment of the sub-surface can improve the value of life in our cities.
Cities are getting busier. For a city to become and remain successful it is necessary that further urbanization and densification occur in a sustainable way. Environmental, economical, cultural and social changes should all be accommodated. This requires careful planning and coordination between all the diferent functions in the public space above and below ground level.

The urban underground possesses a large untapped potential that could contribute significantly to the sustainable and resilient development of cities. Despite this, the importance of the ground beneath cities is still under-recognised and oten overlooked. The main aim of this URBAN UNDERGROUND – THE NEXT ECONOMY day is to provide a long-needed contribution to greater interaction and networking, and so transform the relationship between experts who develop urban subsurface knowledge and those who can benefit most from it: urban planners, urban decision makers and the community.
