City Harbors in the Delta

Harbors in transition

IABR

Ports are in transition all over the world, as they are in the Euro Delta. The energy transition, the return of the manufacturing industry, the emergence of a circular economy, and innovation in production processes contribute to a shift in ‘traditional’ port activities. There are opportunities to use these developments for the socioeconomic development of cities, for example to generate new forms of employment and innovation in residential and work environments. The places where the city and port meet, the ‘city harbors’, are the perfect places to develop these crossovers.

The first results of the IABR–Test Site M4H+ are the starting point for this debate. Subsequently, we’ll zoom in on a number of other city harbors in the Delta, including Ghent, Zaanstad and Antwerp. How do we transcend the traditional ‘port out, city in’ model? Which new forms of area development will that require? And what contribution can design make?
