Test Site M4H+ and Agri-Food

IABR and Team1010

This is a closed work session with stakeholders.

IABR and the initiators of the Rotterdam Makers District, city and port of Rotterdam, see the Merwe-Vierhavens area (M4H) and surrounding neighbourhoods as an ideal area to explore the future, hands on. On the Test Site M4H+ the energy transition and social issues inevitably link up with challenges in the fields of circular economy, the (small) manufacturing industry, and food and water management.

Agri-food: growing the bio-based economy
Organic waste is a resourceful material and can be used as biomass in biofuel, biogas or as feed for algae. Several companies in M4H are already working with this material and are testing its use on an industrial scale. Groencollect, which collects specific waste for processing in a multitude of applications, and Sugu Warehouse, an innovative cluster where advanced technology is being developed, are two examples. The Port of Rotterdam too is pushing hard to make a complete transition from a post-fossil to a bio-based economy not later than 2040. M4H+ represents a unique testing ground. What are the next steps and how to accelerate the transition? Which stakeholders should be involved? And what do they need in order to be able succeed?

On Friday June 15, Team1010 will put the focus on these issues, by means of a stakeholder worksession (by invitation only) and a public intervention: throughout the HAKAfé, a collection of by-products will present the story of the agri-food flow in the area.

On four Friday afternoons in June, Test Site M4H+ spotlights four flows: ENERGY (June 8, as part of the conference The Energy Transition as a Lever of Resilient Cities), AGRI-FOOD (June 15), BUILDING MATERIALS (June 22) and TEXTILES (29 June). The working session for stakeholders generates input for the further development of guiding principles and pilot projects for the future development of M4H+.
