The Water School is a working exhibition in the studio of Studio Makkink & Bey, and a springboard from which to develop a school that, in the near future, will be opened in the heart of the M4H district. Using the IABR as a platform and branching out from the M4H district, the hinterland of Studio Makkink & Bey, the goal is to create an active archive and network which are to be activated and used to establish the Water School.
Starting on June 1, during the biennale, the exhibition will be open to the public on six consecutive Fridays. The Studio will present its findings and lecturers from the cultural, private and administrative sectors will share their views on water and education through presentations and discussions.

The Documenting Day delves into archiving and documenting as a discipline, aiming to collect and bundle the accumulated knowledge of the previous 5 weeks in order to distribute it through various mediums. As the Water School itself is set to be constructed in the near future, it remains a question how its pupils will learn, and what consequences digitalization will have for their education. Will there still be school books and a school library? If not, how would schools bundle and collect the knowledge generated and spread within their future school?

Invited lecturer Dolf Broekhuizen is an architecture historian, whom has dedicated many years of his career to studying schools, both historical schools and contemporary ones, exploring how they adapted to the trend of their times. Within his lecture, Dolf Broekhuizen will place the Water School in a historical context.

The second invited lecturer is Rogier Arents, a designer and graphic artist who aims to bridge the gap between science and the public. He does so through interdisciplinary collaboration with scientific institutes, musea and computer scientists, for which he produces visualizations of their complex data.

Invited artist Guiditta Vendrame explores the intersection of design, art and legal systems. To question the opaque nature of the latter and make them debatable, she employs various media in order to create playful and poetic interventions. She will show and explain her works “What is the purpose of your visit” and “Planisfero Politico”.
